Travelling without insurance could leave you paying a hefty price if something were to go wrong.

Depending on the terms and conditions of the policy, travel insurance pays out in a wide range of circumstances.

Most policies include cover for:

  • emergency medical expenses abroad, such as the cost of treatment and getting you home
  • the costs of cancelling, delaying or cutting your trip short
  • lost or stolen bags
  • disruptions to travel such as delays
  • legal costs, in case you’re sued for accidentally damaging property or causing injury.

The exact cover available will vary significantly between different insurers and policies. So, it’s important to be familiar with the policy wording and in particular the policy exclusions before you buy.

Medical expenses insurance cover outside of the EU could be very valuable and offers peace of mind.

Within the EU, you may think that anEuropean Health Insurance Card (Ehic) or its replacement, theUK Global Health Insurance Card (Ghic), can cover all your medical needs.  This isn’t true.  Some of the most expensive medical services, such as repatriation, aren’t covered by the Ehic or Ghic. They’re limited to health cover and won’t help at all with things like trip cancellation or loss or stolen baggage.  Note that the Ehic no longer provides access to healthcare for UK nationals travelling to Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland.

The Money and Pensions Service (MaPS)

MaPS is an executive non-departmental public body, sponsored by the Department for Work and Pensions and it provides free and impartial debt advice, money guidance and pension guidance to members of the public.

MaPS has a travel insurance directory of specialist providers on its Money Advice Service website for people with pre-existing medical conditions (PEMC’s).

They help people who have potentially been refused cover, had cover excluded, or received a high additional premium to shop around for alternative providers.

In the event that you have had cover excluded by us, you may wish to consult the Directory.

But, you should be aware that most travel insurance providers will void your insurance if it is known that you are travelling for a medical procedure. So, whilst cover for a pre-existing medical condition may be available through other travel policies, another product may not cover you if you are travelling for a medical procedure. You should check before proceeding.

MaPS’s website: https://traveldirectory.moneyadviceservice.org.uk/en
